Is it May already? While it seems the time goes by too swiftly, Wanderings is just getting warmed up, no pun intended! Among May’s plethora of events, we are highlighting Mothers with their very own page of fun; as well as Memorial Day, honoring those who served our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice. This month's cover photo depicts Blairstown's Memorial Ceremony in Cedar Ridge, part of the town's Memorial Day parade hosted by Givens-Belet American Legion Post 258. This year's parade will be honoring the 80th Anniversary of D-Day. Thank you to all moms and military members!

The Wine Train to Villa Milagro Vineyards starts up this weekend and runs through October, while the following weekend is the Spring Open House with the Phillipsburg Railroad Historians. Farmers markets are cropping up, as are summer concert series.

The 35th Annual Raritan River Music Festival runs throughout the month of May, including the Mahattan Chamber Players in Stewartsville. Check out the latest News for more information.

Check in with the Explore Warren team this weekend, at the Rock N Roll Steampunk Fair in Washington Boro on May 4 and at Shippen Manor’s 270th Anniversary celebration in Oxford on May 5. Tell us you heard about it in Wanderings; that makes our day!

Coming Up

Orchard View opens for the season and welcomes all to the farm with operating hours of 10am-5pm, Friday-Sunday. Take a tour and remember Mother's Day as you peruse the gift shop, complete with Lavendar ice cream, chocolate chip brownies, and new this year, macarons!

Calling all Warren County 6-12 graders! Phillipsburg High School will be hosting Health and Wellness Field Day complete with food, live music, dancing, volleyball tournaments with law enforcement, and more!

Join the largest book signing of its kind in New Jersey with an author meet and greet Friday, May 3. Grab some wine and meet over 60 authors, representing many genres. There will also be door prizes and goody bags!

Admission is free.

 

Are you ready for a smashing good time? The Barefoot Grape Stomping is a one of a kind experience, sure to intoxicate all your senses. The event begins with a formal wine tasting followed by a mouth-watering Chicken Parmesan dinner served with roasted vegetables, salad, bread and dessert.

Brook Hollow Winery invites everyone to enjoy happy hour with an additional food truck every Friday along with live music! Seating available on the covered porch by reservation only.

The North New Jersey chapter of the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) is hosting this year's Herb day. Enjoy a day of free informative lectures and presentations, tours of  spectacular gardens, as well as a Craft Market featuring a wide selection of vendors and food.

Board the train for a trip along the banks of the Delaware River to visit Villa Milagro winery.

Warren County Arts presents a poetry and art collaboration running May-June, with a reception May 19, 2-4pm.

Area 57 is all about tech and aviation, highlighting the Drone demonstrations by Warren Community College. The College has been building a nationally acclaimed drone, robotics and AI program, called Uncrewed.

The 4th annual Rock & Roll Steampunk Fair is a day filled with live music, artisan vendors, street performers, and general steampunk shenanigans. Come dressed for the occasion!

The best of the '60s, '70s and '80s music that had us glued to the radio will pumping with Jersey Sound. Along with live music will be '50s dance lessons, costume and hula hoop contest, vinatge cars and food!

Music Line-Up 2024

Featuring the Children's Chorus of Warren County comes the "The Innocence," Warren County Community Singers Spring Concert.

Born in Northwest, NJ and an ode to their roots in Blairstown, Water Street will be performing at Roy's Hall with special guest Close Drive. The band brings a unique blend of pop, alternative rock, folk, and Americana elements with covers from acoustic pop, classic rock, and blues songs.

Get in the spirit of sunshine and warmth with neighbors South of the Border as you put on a sombrero and become immersed in the Mexican culture by raising a glass of Sangria to toast the small town of Puebla for their victory over France to claim their independence in 1861.

Participants will have the option to run or walk this course, which a scenic loop that passes streams, pastures, historic buildings, and the beautiful Musconetcong River on a mostly flat course.

This is a free family event complete with museum tours, reenactors and interpreters including the Jersey Frontier Guard and 2nd NJ Helm Co, multiple organizations including RevNJ Crossroads and 10 Crucial Days and Explore Warren!

Docents will be available to greet visitors and share the history of the Manor, its people, and the local industrial history of Oxford. We are offering tours of the main floor of the building. The last tour begins at 3:30pm.

Architect Michael Margulies presents on this homestead, which is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and has been placed on the New Jersey's Register of Historic Places in 2007. Mr. Margulies runs "The Vought House Inc.," a nonprofit helping to restore the house.

Learn how to grow the flavors of East Asia with Patrick McDuffee of Well-Sweep Herb Farm as he explores herbs from India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. 

Jesse Bardwell joins The Noble Brothers for a night of rock, folk, bluegrass and more at The Arts at St. Luke's.

With a large local following in New Jersey, Yarn, an energetic and evolving Americana/jam/rock group based out of Brooklyn and Raleigh, has played Roy's Hall annually for the past twelve years, sometimes twice a year.

PRRH recently restored Lehigh and Hudson River caboose number 18 will be positioned next to the museum building for all to easily explore. The Centerville and Southwestern Miniature Railroad will be operating, and its museum and gift shop will be open.

Albert Lee is one of the most respected and renowned guitarists in music history, having worked with The Everly Brothers, Eric Clapton, Emmylou Harris and The Crickets over his long and illustrious career.

Blairtown's 2024 Memorial Day Parade hosted by the Givens-Belet American Legion Post 258 starts with the Cedar Ridge Ceremony across from Tractor Supply and steps off at 1 p.m. This year's parade will be honoring the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.

Community Corner

This is an opportunity to bring families together and connect them with community resources provided by Norwescap Child and Family Resource Services' (CFRS).

Donations will be collected in the parking lot both days. The funds received from the clothing drive are used by the deacons in support of their compassionate ministries.

Phillipsburg's first open air market is in its 3rd year with vendors including farms, arts, bakery, flowers, herbs and more.

Free kayak rentals are being offered every Tuesday, May through September at White Lake. There are a limited number of kayaks so reservations are required. Please call 908-763-1760.

Looking for a chance to get off the couch and do some cycling with a local group? Want to reward yourself with craft beer after your ride? Head out to Buttzville every other Sunday through October 28. Arrive by 9:30am and rides leave at 10am sharp.

Do you want to give back to your community in a meaningful way by becoming a licensed resource caregiver. Learn the ins and outs of being a foster parent or adopter and help a child in need.

This presentation will be followed by an opportunity for questions.

It's time to sign up for the Sojourn, a guided paddling and camping trip on the Delaware River! The week-long trip is full of fun and adventure, offering a great time for all participants where wonderful memories are made. You can paddle just one day or as many as you like, as the Sojourn visits different sections of the 330-mile river. The purpose of the Sojourn is to heighten awareness of and appreciation for the Delaware River and its watershed, and it combines canoeing/kayaking, camping, educational programs, historical interpretation, and more. It is for novice to experienced paddlers of all ages, whether it’s for a day or two, or the whole event. It is a great way to get outdoors, meet new people or reconnect with old friends, and enjoy nature - a perfect “staycation” where you feel you are away but still close to home.

The purpose of the Sojourn is to heighten awareness of and appreciation for the Delaware River and its watershed, which flows for 330 miles through New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The Sojourn combines canoeing/kayaking, camping, educational programs, historical interpretation, and more. It is for novice to experienced paddlers of all ages; participants can sign up for the whole event or for the section(s) or day(s) of their choice. The Sojourn is fully insured and sanctioned by the American Canoe Association. Each day is accompanied by a safety team, made up of members of the National Canoe Safety Patrol.
