The Summer Lawn Concert series at Shippen Manor in Oxford moves to its new time, 5-7 p.m., with the August 4 show by the gypsy-swing-jazz-folk quartet Pyrenesia.
The free concerts ran from 6-8 p.m. from June 16 to July 28, but the final five shows start and end an hour earlier. Shippen Manor, a Warren County history museum in what had been the mansion of the masters of Oxford Furnance from Colonial days, is just one block west of the Route 31traffic light in Oxford. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, alcohol free coolers, and picnic baskets to the free concerts.
Based in Lambertville, NJ, Pyrenesia combines original compositions with the Django Reinhardt tradition of gypsy jazz, Eastern European and klezmer melodies, and anything else that swings. Pyrenesia delivers a foot-stomping, dress-swirling, hand-clapping experience to lift spirits and transport listeners to a high energy musical landscape, as high as the Pyrenees.
The remaining shows of the season, all running from 5-7 p.m., are:
August 11: StoneHearth Bluegrass Band, playing classic Bluegrass
August 18: Rave On, a Buddy Holly/Roy Orbison tribute band
August 25: This Way to the Egress, playing Dark Cabaret
Sept. 1: Paddy and the Pale Boys, Irish pub music.
This free concert is presented by the Warren County Cultural & Heritage Division of Land Preservation, supported by the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and funded in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. The lawn at Shippen Manor is reasonably accessible and accessible lavatories are available. For further information please call (908) 453-4381. StoneHearth Bluegrass Band plays traditional bluegrass but has been known to put a bluegrass style on hits by Simon and Garfunkle, The Drifters, The Everly Brothers and even The Beatles. They were one of about 80 acts selected from 700 to perform in the program Music Under the City, playing at various subway stations throughout New York City, with the biggest night playing under Madison Square Garden the same night the Country Music Awards were held there. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the show!
RAVE ON! features the music of Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, the timeless sounds that inspired The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and The Rolling Stones, to name a few, and continues to influence a countless number of today’s artists. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket, and pack a picnic if you like.
